The area around the abandoned Mayfield Railway Station near Piccadilly Station is proposed to be developed into a major civil service hub soon. The proposals for this scheme are being heard and consultations will be made public early next year.

This development is expected to enhance the region’s reputation as an ideal location for commercial initiatives. The regional minister, Phil Woolas, has expressed high hopes for the development of the area following this initiative. He has said that other civil servants can also be placed here to fully utilise the infrastructural advantages that will be established here after the completion of the project. The government has announced plans to relocate some 24000 civil servants in all to places out of London over the next few years. At present proposals are being heard for this business development and consultations will be made public by 2014.

The project is being referred to as the ‘Whitehall of the north’ and will involve construction of a set of high tech shared office buildings around a public park. About five thousand civil servants from Greater Manchester area will be relocated to this area after the construction is complete.

Several changes and modifications will be done here including the reopening of Mayfield Railway station which is now abandoned. The extension of the inner ring road will also be undertaken to facilitate access to this area.

The government initiated the proposals by making its interest in this area public back in May this year. After discussions it was decided that feasibility studies of the area as an appropriate location for such development can be undertaken seriously.
