Amazing 1892 Golf Book Predicted Bullet Trains, TV, More

Posted in Sports News + More by admin on the May 27th, 2008

Did you hear about the strange little book, written in 1892, that predicted such wonders as bullet trains, digital watches, television and women’s liberation decades before those things came to pass?

The book leapt into the news in early 2005 when a rare first edition sold at auction for more than $2,000.

The strangest thing about the book is that it is not a work of science fiction, as we would generally understand the term, nor some obscure tract of religious prophecy. Instead it’s a novel about, of all things, golf.

Written by a 19th-century professional Scottish golfer named J. (or Jay) McCullough, about whom very little is known, “Golf in the Year 2000; or, What We Are Coming To” also predicted the advent of golf carts and international golf competitions.

Published under McCollough’s pseudonym, J.A.C.K., the book chronicles the tale of a character named Alexander J. Gibson who falls into a near-comatose state on March 24, 1892. He awakens 108 years later (on March 25, 2000) into a world, where, among other things, women dress like men, run businesses and hold most of the top government positions.

Gibson also learns, to his considerable delight, that women do all the work in this evolved society while the men play golf full time. Upon being informed of this fact, he cries out that it’s “the dream of my former existence come true! I am, indeed, a lucky man to see it. … The world is evidently getting things ship-shape. … Oh, how I would like to wake up some of my old chums. I know a few who would appreciate the arrangement.”

But Gibson finds that his beloved golf has changed radically, too. He has to adjust to the existence of driverless golf carts, golf clubs that automatically register their user’s score and jackets that yell “Fore!” whenever the golfer begins to swing. He finds the jackets to be particularly grating, but it’s the rule at every club in Britain: you can’t play unless
you’re wearing one.

He also gets to watch — via a television-like device that works through an elaborate mirror arrangement — a golf competition between Britain and the United States, much like the Ryder Cup (an event which did not begin until 1927).

And, he learns that wars have ceased, at least among the European powers, because international disputes are now settled by … golf matches.

One thing about golf hasn’t changed, Gibson reflects following a round of golf in which he emerges the victor–and has to listen to his defeated opponent grousing about bad luck. “The same old excuses, I thought. Among all those inventions, surely they might have got something new in that line.”

The main character’s adventures in the year 2000 also include taking a ride in an underground tubular railway, which people familiarly call the “tub,” and reading about a new London-to-New York speed record of two hours and 32 minutes, which is achieved by a bullet-type train traveling beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

Little things, too, amaze him: He no longer has to shave every day; instead, he brushes a miraculous preparation of some sort over his cheeks once a week and this is sufficient to keep down his beard. Similarly, he uses a hairbrush that keeps his hair at the length of his choosing, so he never needs to visit the barber (which is good, since barbers no longer exist).

The appeal of “Golf in the Year 2000″ is perhaps stronger today than it was when it was first published. Golfing fans, as could be expected, enjoy it for its wry commentary on the sport as practiced in the 19th century and in
the “future” (our present) as imagined by a contemporary of H.G. Wells, who was also writing speculative fiction about things to come. General readers have fallen in love with it, too. Not only is it fun to go through it tallying up author McCullough’s hits and misses on the predictive front, the book radiates a kind of Victorian charm that is reminiscent of a Sherlock Holmes story.

Now, the world is rediscovering this little literary fantasy.

In January of 2005, news services reported that an American collector named James Espinola had paid $2,240 at auction for a rare first edition of “Golf in the Year 2000″. Although Espinola is said to be in the process of selling off his own huge collection of golf memorabilia, he was quoted as explaining that he can’t resist buying the occasional “odd thing” at auction–and this was one of those things.

The Edinburgh, Scotland, auction house of Lyon and Trumbull had guessed that the book would fetch less than a quarter of what it ended up bringing. The auctioneers’ golf specialist was quoted as saying that the final price “took us a bit by surprise.”

Although original editions of the book are extremely rare, it has occasionally been reprinted in facsimile editions from time to time. No one thought to make it available to the vast audiences of the World Wide Web, though, until recently.

On February 26, 2005, a little over a month following the news about the auctioned first edition, “Golf in the Year 2000″ made its debut on the Web. The full text of this odd and
engaging book is finally available for anyone, anywhere to read–without charge.

At the end of the book, the main character declares that he does not intend to wake up and find himself back in 1892 again, and that his amazing adventure was all a dream. “No, no; I’m in 2000, and in 2000 I mean to stay.” Like
him, the tale of his adventure seems to have found a secure place in our time.

We Should Listen to Mike Tice

Posted in Sports News + More by admin on the May 3rd, 2008

It’s time that we listen to Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice and take him at his word. He asked us early in the season to reserve judgment until the end of the year. He told us that if he failed then it was on his shoulders.
When Tice took over as head coach three years ago we were all led to believe that he had all the ingredients necessary to do well.

Mike Tice’s Vikings aren’t any better today then they were three years ago. Mike Tice has made the playoffs one time and that was last year. Mike Tice has a combined win/loss record of 31-33.

It seems as though every time Tice’s team takes a step forward, they take five steps backward.

So we should take Tice at his word. We must listen to him and hold him accountable for his actions. Mike has failed once again and I don’t feel that there are any reasons that he should be given another chance.

If Tice had the character and could instill values into his players then I might have a different opinion. His team had off the field scandals from Onterio Smith’s Whizzinator incident to the Viking’s Boat scandal.
Then there was Tice’s scalping incident. Mike Tice scalped Super Bowl tickets and was caught. The NFL fined him $100,000. Tice blew the incident off and considered it a minor infraction. Very few people are fined as much as $100,000 for a first time offense. Obviously the NFL considered his actions to be serious enough to warrant such a stiff penalty.

Mike Tice says that he shouldn’t be held accountable for his player’s actions. This is nonsense.
I don’t think that his players respect him. How can he command any respect when he broke an NFL rule?
How can he demand that his players respect rules and laws. How can he demand that they conduct themselves in a respectful manner on and off the field?

The answer is that Mike Tice can’t command respect and he can’t demand that his player’s follow the rules.
There are a number of coaches in the NFL that demand more from their players on and off the field. These coaches won’t put up with the type of behavior that was exhibited by Vikings players this year.

Mike Tice also has a big mouth and has been known to yell at fans and call them stupid when he disagrees with their criticism.

I just can’t see any logical reason why Mike Tice should keep his job. I do feel that people should do their best to keep their word and when they ask us to judge them based on the results of their actions, we should listen to them.

Mike Tice asked us to judge him based on his success or failure with the Vikings this season. He asked us to wait until the end of the season to judge him.
With Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the Vikings season ended in failure. The Vikings will not be playing in the playoffs.

I hope that Vikings ownership doesn’t give him too much credit for his winning streak. That winning streak came against some of the worst teams in the NFL. When his team faced tough opponents they stunk up the field.

It’s definitely time for the Vikings to start a new era with a new coach.

2006 Pittsburgh Pirates Predictions

Posted in Sports News + More by admin on the April 25th, 2008

If only the Pirates still had Barry Bonds? They did pick up 2-time All-star and perennial .300 hitter Sean Casey from Cincinnati in exchange for a young question mark pitcher in Dave Williams. I think Pittsburgh comes out ahead on this deal but it won’t be near enough to put them over the hump in the NL Central. Pittsburgh put up 3 straight seasons of 70 wins or more before fading to just 67 victories in 2005. This number will likely sink again this season. They also are looking for Jeromy Burnitz, who they signed to a one-year deal, to give them a big lift from the left side of the plate. Although, he might have been the best available player, what the Pirates really need are some strong right-handed sticks to alleviate their major trouble with left-handed hurlers. Over the past 3 seasons, if you were to have gone against Pittsburgh as a greater than +150 dog when they were facing a lefty starter, you would have been 16-2. This is a very strong trend that you will want to look for this season. However, trends are subject to change and the addition of Randa, Casey, and Burnitz could cause some positive changes. Jason Bay is really emerging as a star for the Bucs. Last year he played in every single game while hitting 32 home runs, getting 101 runs across the plate, and scoring 110 runs himself while batting an amazing .306. This is one young star for Pittsburgh fans to keep an eye on as he progress into a super star.

The Pirates look to be trying to mold their team to be more like the Reds hoping that they’ll be able to outscore teams. But it appears that they’ll run into the same problems as Cincinnati had on the mound as the Bucs don’t have a proven pitching staff or even a dominant starter. They gave up their top wins guy, Williams, for Casey, and Wells, their runner-up in wins, will likely miss the entire season with a blocked artery and Pittsburgh has said that they’ll try to fill the void from within the organization. They’re in a terrible pitching predicament, but with the addition of some players they could support their pitchers better than last season. See how this team develops in the early going. The 2006 Pirates have the makings of a good overs team. The pressure will be on Zach Duke, he came in the middle of the season to go 8-2 with a 2.92 ERA. Oliver Perez was dangerous until what is believed to be a lack of conditioning set him back to a 5.85 ERA last season. Kip Wells went 8-18 with a 5.09 ERA, not exactly what they had in mind, but all three of these guys are relatively young and will need to grow if the Pirates are going to do anything this season. The bullpen is shaky at best, which will put more pressure on these young arms to shoulder even more of the load late into games.

Mastercraft Tires - Driving With Style

Posted in Sports News + More by admin on the March 30th, 2008

The contributions of the American company on the landscape of the United States in its history and contemporary makeup have an absolutely wide varied place its difficult to comprehend at times. Without question, though, a contribution that certainly went beyond the community development and needed product provider that is so commonly connected with various companies, was that if plant usage in the World War II effort made by so many companies. Such was the case with the future producers of the Mastercraft Tire when the hard goods point of their production facilities was transformed into a production plant for such items as: pontoons, landing boats and other military goods in 1941.

Its probably little more than an interesting anecdote to today’s consumers of Mastercraft Tires, but it seems to set a reasonable precedence for a company that has seemingly continued to give to its country of origin. The makers of Mastercraft Tires, the Cooper Tire and Rubber Company, has led the industry in several safety innovations, grew into a fortune 500 company and lasted through tumultuous corporate restructuring times to remain as one of only two tire companies to last as U.S. owned.

The company has continued its historical track record of existing well beyond than simply a firm that produces goods and collects the revenues. The company has held safety in such high regard that it established a joint effort, along with the National Safety Council, to create and implement a safety program and campaign that was dedicated to youth education.

Today Mastercraft Tires remain a tire of quality and safety to consumers which place both in high regard, but nothing less should be expected from a company that has continued to surpass expectations
